BACKGROUND: Ambre has heard "the Parma Violet" referred to several times in the circles she frequents, believing it to be a new Italian soprano at the Opera, only to discover it's the nickname for an infamous muse and model to a large part of the artistic community in Paris. Seeing as her fiancé is a painter himself, she convinces him to introduce them to each other at the next society meeting, curious about the other woman whom she has only seen in paintings. Jean-Pierre is of a liberal mind and agrees, bringing both Ambre and her brother, Armand, to the next party where Violetta, as "the Parma Violet" is really called, is in attendance. Upon first meeting with the other woman, Ambre falls in love instantaneously, without realizing this is what has happened. She begins begging Jean-Pierre to bring her to upcoming parties, too. After a few intense, intimate meetings, Violetta takes Ambre to bed and they initiate a secret affair. When Ambre, however, insists they run away together, Violetta refuses and, to push the other girl away as well as to make her realize what kind of woman Violetta is, which kind of man her fiancé is and what kind of world they all live in, she tells her that she has slept with Jean-Pierre on several occasions when modelling for him. Heartbroken, Ambre leaves Violetta and finds Jean-Pierre back at her brother's house, confronting him about her new knowledge. He admits to everything, but also assures her that he loves her, regardless of what sins lie in his male nature, but Ambre still runs away during the night, buying a train ticket to Switzerland, where she and Violetta had jokingly discussed spending the summers on a bed of violets. Remembering the song of Mozart, she decides that she will go there to find an untrampled violet and send it to Violetta, as a final attempt to make her choose Ambre over her current life.
